1- START Project Has Ended

The START project has taken its course. The EC FP6 grant that funded the effort of 10 partners from 9 countries has ended.

I would like to express my thanks to all partners for the enormous efforts that they have dedicated to the project and for their excellent work.

At this time, we can only evaluate the project as more than highly successful. With its activities, START project definitely contributed a lot to the European Community's Research Policy and in European Space Policy.

START succeeded in mapping the aerospace field in 13 Central and East European countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey) and thus has done its best for saving their aerospace experience, expertise and heritage. A user friendly, interactive portal and a searchable database of researchers, research organizations, universities, industry parties, small and middle enterprises, etc., involved in aerospace activities or possessing aerospace expertise in these 13 countries was also created. In March 2006 the database contains over 500 entries, i.e. 277 organizations and 234 individuals!

Organizing 5 brokerage events and workshops, the project has contributed to the strengthening of the network of NCP, researchers and liaison officers form all European countries. It helps in creating a better personal communications between Aeronautics and Space NCPs from all over Europe that will be used during the 7FP.

The project’s portal (http://start.stil.bas.bg/index_bg.html), has registered 2391 unique entries till 10.05.2006. Preliminary estimations revealed that the numbers will rise up to 4699 till end of 2006. Despite of the fact that the project is over, we can promise you is that STIL-BAS, START project coordinating organization, will continue to keep the portal during the 7FP! The database will be enriched searchable and available for use free of charge during the next years.

What is more, we have created a “News” section at the START portal. This section will replace the START Newsletter. After publishing 19 issues and distributing them to over 2000 addresses the Newsletter is also at its end http://startnews.tubitak.gov.tr. You are reading the last issue. The “News” at the START portal will provide you, the readers, with interesting pieces of information and has the main goal to keep you up-date with some of the most interesting events.

Thank you for your support and for being with us during the last two years! Do not forget to visit START portal at Aeronautics and Space Portal (http://www.aerospace-start.org and http://start.stil.bas.bg/index_bg.html) for both receiving information and partner search!

FP7 is coming! You need it!

Yours,

T. Dachev
